Archive for March, 2012

I wanted to get out and take some photos with my new lens (Canon EF 70-300 mm) and wanted to keep with the theme of longer exposure times. This is a 15 second exposure at an aperture of f10. As you can tell, I am enjoying making use of my new Giottos tripod and my remote switch!

After working my last night shift, I was  fortunate to catch a beautiful sunrise. Although the sky is beautiful, you can start to see the drab look of the Super stack. As someone said to me regarding the previous night time pictures, “your picture of the stacks makes it look pretty”, which is a big thing because in daylight, it looks anything but pretty!

Gallows frame is just another term for Head frame, or in other words the tall structure that you see on the left see of the picture. This is Vale’s South Mine, and could not resist the opportunity to take a long exposure (73 seconds) of it. You may notice the red and white streaks running horizontal to the picture. This is Regional Road 55 that connects Sudbury to Lively.

This photo was taken with a 15 second exposure, and I like how it has given the stack an eerie glow to it. This is the stack at the Vale Copper Refinery.

The Superstack… What else can I say?!

It has been really quiet around here this week, I have had a couple of surprise night shifts that I needed to do! It has also been an exciting week, my new lens (Canon EF 70-300) arrived and I bought a  GIOTTOS MTL3361B 3SECT TRIPOD W/PAN HEAD. Combine those two things and having to work through the night and you get shots like this!

The theme for this week will be night shots, as I took a load of them.

A little background on the smoke stack you see above, courtesy of Wikipedia:

“The Inco Superstack in Sudbury, Ontario, with a height of 380 meters (1,250 ft), is the tallest chimney in Canada and the Western hemisphere, and the second tallest freestanding chimney in the world after the GRES-2 Power Station in Kazakhstan. It is also the second tallest freestanding structure of any type in Canada, ranking behind the CN Tower but ahead of First Canadian Place, it is the same height as the Empire State Building and the 27th tallest freestanding structure in the world. The Superstack sits atop the largest nickel smeltingoperation in the world at Inco’s Copper Cliff processing facility in the city of Greater Sudbury.

It was constructed in 1972 by Inco Limited (now Vale) at an estimated cost of 25 million dollars; from the date of its completion until the GRES-2 chimney was constructed in 1987, it was the world’s tallest smokestack. Between the years 1972–75 it was the tallest freestanding structure in Canada.”

Finally Get To Play Outside…

The weather has turned balmy, and Moxie is finally playing outside without stopping every two seconds to sniff something. She generally showed little interest in this ball, until I wouldn’t let her have it!

Looking forward to the nice weather and longer days to take more photos. Also, have some new gear coming that I will review once I get it!

Besides getting a really awesome, really big early birthday present (my T3i), my little man (14 months old) decided that I shouldn’t have to lug around a square, non-ergonomic camera bag when we go up to camp or for our impending trip to Europe later this summer.

Just like his father, he can appreciate a good bargain and loves to buy things on sale! Today a box was delivered to me at work that contained this… The Clik Elite Impulse Sling (http://clikelite.com).

As you can see by the photos below, there is a main pocket on the top (good for a light jacket and other misc items). The DSLR pocket can hold a ProBody SLR with a telephoto lens and either two smaller lenses or one medium lens, and a flash at a minimum. The DSLR pocket is also modifiable by rearranging the dividers. There is a zippered pocket at the bottom that can store filters, memory cards and pretty well anything else that is generally flat. Finally, there are two mesh pockets, one that can be used as a tripod/water bottle holder, and the other to store misc other stuff.

Amazon Canada is having an amazing sale right now, with all the Clik Elite stuff up to 60% off. Maybe it’s time that you get a new pack?! I am really looking forward to putting this one through it’s paces. I will post my first impressions once I have the opportunity to use it! 🙂

Woke up the other morning to a fog hanging over the city. It was the first day of complete sun and +7˚Celsius temperatures. Looking forward to things turning green!!

Our Little Man…

This is one of my favourite photos of our little man… He found the recipe drawer, proceeded to take every single book and page out of it and then just kept tossing them around. The smile on his face is just priceless!
